Stress gets the best of all of us at one time or another.
It could be one big thing that sets us off, or one small thing that becomes two small things, three small things … and, all of a sudden — boom.
Every person in every industry deals with it, and real estate agents are no different. From juggling several clients, fellow agents not returning your calls or incessant sellers, we all reach our boiling point.
Perhaps there’s no way to completely avoid stress. But we can take steps to reduce the stress we feel on a day-to-day, month-to-month or even hourly basis.
Here are nine stress-reducing tips for real estate agents to help you be a better person and agent.
1. Take a Break
Stop, step away from what you’re doing and take a breath.
Phew! Feel better already, don’t you?
No matter what’s bringing you down or bothering you, there’s no harm in taking a step back. Writer’s block keeping you from writing that blog? Want to leave a fiery voicemail for an agent who still hasn’t called you back? Have you worked three straight weeks without a day off?
Whether it’s a 30-minute break, calming yourself by counting to 10 or going on a weekend vacation, time away from the stressor will make you better prepared to deal with it when you return.
2. Exercise
You don’t need us to tell you that 30 minutes of cardio a day is head and heart healthy for everyone. We’re not suggesting signing up for a couch-to-5K, but simply getting outside for a 20- or 30-minute walk on a sunny day (without your phone) or purchasing a gym membership will release endorphins and make you happy.
3. Meditate
4. Become a Yogi
Yes, we encourage you to prevent forest fires. But also consider reducing stress by exercising your mind and your body.
And, if you can’t completely turn off “work mode,” joining a yoga studio or going to a regular class is a great way for real estate agents to find new business through networking.
5. Listen to Music
Music has the power to impact us regardless of mood. It affects creativity, pumps us up, takes us back to a childhood memory and has even helped us get over a breakup.
Its influence can also help us reduce stress.
6. Improve Your Sleep
The importance of sleep can’t be overstated. As we all know: “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a real estate agent healthy, wealthy and wise.”
Many Americans suffer from poor sleep, however. If you’re one of them, check out these 17 tips to sleep better.
7. Play with a Dog
8. Adjust Your Goals/Expectations
Most people would admit the majority of their stress is self-induced. Between working toward accomplishing a huge goal, comparing ourselves to others or the endless pursuit of perfection, some people struggle with finding the right work-life balance.
Goals are great and wanting to be the best is admirable. But only you and those close to you can judge when you’ve reached your limit and need to take a step back and reassess.
9. Hire Help
Find an assistant. Outsource some aspects of your business. Consider joining a new office or starting your own team.
